Calgary Police Hope Netflix Show Brings More Answers to Amanda Antoni's Unsolved Death

Unsolved Mysteries Sheds New Light on a Troubling Case

The latest episode of Unsolved Mysteries, a popular true crime documentary series on Netflix, delves into the troubling death of Amanda Antoni. In the fall of 2015, Antoni was discovered in the basement of her Castleridge home in northeast Calgary. Though Calgary police ultimately ruled her death as accidental, questions and uncertainties linger, leaving investigators, family, and friends without full closure.

A Mysterious Death

Amanda Antoni, 31, was found dead in her home in 2015. The Calgary police spent 14 months investigating the incident, initially considering it suspicious. However, they concluded that her death resulted from an accidental fall down the stairs. Despite this ruling, many aspects of the case remain unresolved, prompting police to seek further insights through the Unsolved Mysteries series.

Lingering Questions

Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary police homicide unit expressed the ongoing concerns surrounding Antoni's case. "As homicide investigators, it is our duty to seek closure and provide answers to a victim's family … answers without a shadow of a doubt," Gregson stated. "In cases where questions remain, we do everything in our power to uncover the truth."

Gregson believes that the exposure from the Unsolved Mysteries episode could generate new developments in the case. This collaboration marks the first time Calgary police have worked with the series, aiming to reach a broader audience and potentially uncover new leads.

The Scene of the Incident

In October 2015, Amanda's husband, Lee Antoni, placed a 911 call after discovering her body. Lee, who was out of town for the weekend, was not considered a suspect, and the couple had no reported instances of domestic violence.

Retired detective Dave Sweet described the scene as suspicious, noting the significant amount of blood and severe head injury Antoni sustained. "She was found in a position not consistent with a natural passing," Sweet remarked. An autopsy determined Antoni died between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening, nearly two days before she was found.

Conflicting Evidence

Despite ruling the death accidental, there was no full consensus among investigators. Sweet highlighted the lack of evidence pointing to an intruder, such as DNA, footwear, or fingerprints. However, certain elements of the scene raised doubts.

For instance, Antoni appeared to have been struck by a piggy bank found at the top of the basement stairs. Ceramic shards from the object were scattered around her body, and a chair was upturned on the main floor. These details contributed to the uncertainty surrounding the case.

Unanswered Questions

Staff Sgt. Gregson pointed out several unresolved aspects of the investigation. One key question is why Antoni, injured and in the basement, did not go back upstairs. Footprints near the bottom of the stairs, believed to be Antoni's, indicated she was able to stand and face the staircase at some point.

"There still are lingering questions that you see in the Unsolved Mysteries episode … things that don't make sense," Gregson said. "Why didn't Amanda go up the stairs? I think that's one of the biggest ones in my mind over all these years."

Hope for Closure

Detective Sweet expressed hope that the Unsolved Mysteries episode would bring Amanda's family the closure they desperately seek. "Of course, at the heart of all of this is a very loving, caring family who just wants to understand what happened to their sister, to their daughter," he said. "I think there's always that hope that something will come through, that somebody out there will have information."

The episode featuring Amanda Antoni's case is now available on Netflix, potentially reaching a wide audience and sparking new leads in this unsolved mystery.
