Calgary Transit Brings On-Demand Service to More Neighbourhoods
Good news for residents of Calgary's newest communities—starting this Sunday, long treks to bus stops will be a thing of the past. Calgary Transit is expanding its On-Demand service, making it easier for people in certain areas to connect with the city's broader transit network.
How On-Demand Transit Works
With the On-Demand service, residents can now book rides between their neighborhood and nearby transit hubs or amenities. This new feature provides a direct link to the larger Calgary Transit system, making public transportation more accessible than ever.
Sharon Fleming, the director of Calgary Transit, shared the list of communities benefiting from this update: Ambleton, Sage Hill, Seaton, Pinecreek, Yorkville, Glacier Ridge, Rangeview, Riccardo Ranch, and Belmont. For many residents, this service is a game-changer, especially for those who’ve had to endure long walks to catch a bus.
Residents' Reactions
Local residents are welcoming the change with open arms. One mother, navigating her day with kids in tow, expressed her relief, saying, “That would be great, because as you can see I have my wagon and co and it’s quite the mission.” Another resident echoed the sentiment, saying, “That would be a great help for us if we get this kind of facility in this area.”
What to Expect with On-Demand
One of the biggest perks of the On-Demand service is its speed. According to Fleming, the wait time is significantly reduced. “Ideally the wait time is up to 15 minutes, so it’s actually a great level of service,” she noted. This is often faster than some of the regularly scheduled bus routes.
Booking a ride is straightforward—just use the new Calgary Transit On Demand App. The app allows users to book their trips, select fellow passengers, and even find out if a wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available. While there may be a short walk to meet the vehicle, this slight inconvenience is balanced by quicker, more direct routes.
Looking Forward
Calgary Transit is excited to roll out this service and see how it improves the daily lives of Calgarians in these communities. “We’re really looking forward to seeing all of you on board and getting you to where you need to go, as efficiently as possible,” Fleming added.
